Frank Callery is an award-winning poet, songwriter, editor, journalist and historian, who revels in the words and music of his heritage and tradition. A Dubliner, he has lived in Co. Kilkenny for the past 25 years. His Collected Poems, “The Whole Shebang” — available from this site — was published in 2014. He has written three Song Collections of a comic and satirical nature: “A Tundish of Trumpery”; “40 Songs of a Comic, Bent”; and “The Songs of Brexit & Other Political Failures!” He has also edited and reissued as an E-Book : “An Historical Enquiry respecting the Performance on the Harp in The Highlands of Scotland” under his imprint O’Mega Publications. All Available on Apple Books. He is currently completing a 2 volume social history: ‘A History of Blindness in Irish Society’.

His recently released CD “Songs from a Life” had been received to critical acclaim — It can be purchased directly from this site — An Album of 13 original songs including a beautiful song-setting of Austin Clarke’s great and enigmatic poem ‘The Planter’s Daughter’.

The Lords of Light,Newgrange

Before metal seeped
from slag or crucible,
When night-light was rush
Fired in tallow
Or fear-scarred moon,
This was raised.

Megalithic hoarder of secrets;
Its piling, reverberant
On the incus of race,
Tells of hirsute forebears
Grimed in sweat,
And grunt sounding the tally
Of scavenged stones.

Who cyphered these great stones
Saw their geometry spiral
To amaze posterity,
Shunned all approximations
To engender the dense
Precision of their art,
Craving each moon’s connivance,
The punctuality of suns.
